Background and-or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
The incumbent functions as a member of the nursing team and assists the RN in the care of patients in acute, sub acute, or chronic states of illness. The incumbent performs aspects of care, which require understanding of complex patient treatment programs, an understanding of physical and behavior concepts, which are essential to individualizing nursing care. Assists providers and nurses in the performance of diagnostic examinations by performing duties such as monitoring vital signs and pain level, preparing and positioning the patient or by performing a variety of r! outine diagnostic tests. Assists providers and nurses in the care and treatment of the ill receiving medical, surgical, psychiatric, or outpatient treatment. Observes and reports to the RN changes in patient behavior, attitude, bodily complaints, and appearance. Enters specific information into the patients electronic record and records informant onto appropriate flow sheet, treatment sheets, etc. Performs a wide variety of duties aimed at increasing the comfort and personal hygiene of the patient, maintaining a safe and clean environment.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-4: 6 months qualifying general experience and 6 months qualifying specialized experience.

GS-5: 1 year of qualifying specialized experience or a degree in a 4 year course of ! study in a related field.

Equivalent combinations of education! and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable.

General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specializ! ed experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

Education: High school graduation or the equivalent is qualifying for GS-2.

Successfully completed post-high school education is qualifying for grades GS-3 through GS-5. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as th! at of a home health aid performing duties such as:

Providing p! ersonal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

Education and Training:
For GS-4: Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.

Physical Requirements: The work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. Regular bending, lifting, stooping, walking, stretching, pushing and repositioning patients.
