Provides direct care to the perioperative patient, pediat! ric through geriatric population. Addresses all aspects of care psychosocial, physical, and general related to the surgical environment. Communicates with Director, Surgeons, and Anesthesiologists continuously about the care of the patient. Participates in Performance Improvement activities. Monitors strict adherence to the Universal Protocol. Monitors and provides nursing care as needed throughout their perioperative experience. Demonstrates flexibility to all areas of assignment. Maintains efficient flow in all areas of unit - assists with acquisition of equipment when necessary.
Performs a wide variety of clinical tasks, including but not limited to: Vital signs, FSBG, Pulse Oximetry, oxygen set up, IV insertion/removal, phlebotomy, obtaining and processing specimens, shave preps when applicable, wick insertion and removal, performance a! nd transmission of EKG, and proper use/maintenance of Med station.
Identifies and documents common and potential patient problems and symptoms in relation to Surgical Standards of Care and individual patient needs. Differentiates between Ambulatory and Inpatient Surgical Standards of Care and utilizes them in the appropriate manner.
Reviews physicians’ orders on assigned patients prior to care and requests physicians’ orders when appropriate to plan/complete patient care.
Receives and communicates pertinent basic information regarding patient care while in the unit. Establishes nursing interventions and outcomes for any defined problems.
Uses free time constructively by: checking charts, floating to other areas within Surgical Services if needed, organizing desk area/files, ordering discharge instructions if needed, asking charge RN for assignments, etc., restocking area when tech not available, maintaining files, and is organi! zed with patient care.
Uses good assessment and communication ! skill when assuming the charge role. Is capable of problem solving and knows when to seek the assistance of the clinical coordinator or designee.
Assists in maintaining a high level of morale and motivation on the unit by working to maintain a rapport with peers and coworkers by utilizing good, honest communication techniques and not conspiring with others against peers. Assists with orientation of new personnel.
Demonstrates strong, positive and professional communication and role modeling behaviors at all times, in all assigned areas.
Completes annual competencies and UHS mandatory annual requirements. Participates in all planned meetings, internal trainings/education sessions as required.
Education
Graduate of an accredite! d registered nurse program required; Bachelors preferred.
Experience
One to three years acute care experience preferred.
Required Certification/Licensure
Registered in NYS as a registered nurse professional.
Specialty certification preferred.
CPR certification, ACLS and PALS preferred.
Required Skills
Reads, writes and speaks English.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Computer skills preferred.
Physical Demands
Continuous standing and/or walking.
Frequent bending and twisting of neck and back, reaching below waist level, squatting.
Frequent pushing/pulling, lifting portion of patients’ weight up to 35 lbs; over 35 lbs requires assistive devices or other employee assistance.
Fine manual dexterity for computer use.
